The spectacular Hector Falls is best seen from Seneca Lake, however the upper portion of the waterfall is easily viewed from the NY 414 bridge that travels right next to the falls. The bridge over Falls Creek is 3.4 miles north of Watkins Glen along NY 414. The shoulder of the road is wide on both sides of the road as well as both sides of the bridge for parallel parking.

Tinker Falls in NY

image

Found this trail description in NY Hiking:

Located in the 1483 acre Labrador Hollow Unique Area is the beautiful main 50 foot Tinker Falls with its impressive natural rock amphitheater above a 30 foot rocky cascade. The falls are most spectacular during the spring thaw and after a major rain storm. The falls can be reached for viewing from a short accessible trail from NY 91.

A large parking lot off NY 91 marks the trailhead for Tinker Falls.  It is located south of Labrador Crossing Road, just south of the Onondaga/Cortland County line on the west side of the road.  The GPS coordinates are N42 46.820 W76 02.182 for the parking area.  This is also the trailhead for the Skyline Trail, the “Hang Glider Spot on Jones Hill” and the North Country National Scenic Trail, which actually passes nearly directly above the waterfall.

The Tinker Falls Trail begins across NY 91 at the kiosk.  Handicap parking is available on that side of the road where the trail begins. The accessible trail follows along Tinker Falls creek, which is on your right as you walk along the path.  You may notice the steep walls begin to surround you as you get further away from the kiosk.  A few benches are available along the trail for those who’d like to take a break. The trail is very easy with a very gentle grade and can be enjoyed by everyone in your family.

The accessible trail ends at 0.25 miles from the kiosk. There is a partial view of the falls from here. Many people walk up further through the slippery stream bed to get closer to the falls and even behind the falls.  You do this at your own risk of serious injury.  Remember that the rocks are very slippery and can be dangerous. Look up above the falls and remember that the North Country Trail is located just beyond the top of the falls on its long journey from North Dakota to Crown Point, NY.

OK Slip Falls Tract

Highest waterfall in the Adirondack Mtns has been acquired by state and available to hikers. Read on about access and the plans to make trails and parking accessible to public. Link follows:

“The highest waterfall in the Adirondacks has been unavailable to explore, accept distant views from trail less Kettle Mountain, until now.  New York State purchased the 2800 acres of what is now called the OK Slip Falls Tract on April 23, 2013.   The seldom seen OK Slip Falls will become one of the popular destinations in the Adirondacks.  We hope the NY DEC constructs a large parking area and improves the dirt road into the tract to handle the future traffic.

There are no official trails in this newly acquired tract that also includes Blue Ledge, OK Slip Pond and a couple of other ponds.  There seems to be an access road that leads toward OK Slip Pond and then on to Carter Pond.  The access road is off of NY 28 about 8.5 miles east of Indian Lake.  The GPS coordinates of the junction of OK Slip Road and NY 28 is N43 46.373 W74 06.733 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.  We have included a couple of maps below.  The bottom topo map shows an old trail that leads from OK Slip Pond toward the falls.

There are few pictures found of the falls, here is one from NY Falls website, taken from Kettle Mountain.  According to reports, the DEC plans to have this tract open by the summer 2013.  The waterfall drops about 250 feet into a gorge.  We will be updating this page when we get more info. Please send us any info that you might find to share with other hikers.
