“Clarence Earl Gideon, a Florida drifter who spent time in and out of prisons for nonviolent crimes, was an unlikely individual to help redefine a criminal defendant’s right to counsel 60 years ago in the Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright. Public Defense Week and National Public Defender Day, which occur March 18, commemorate the landmark case and the vital work of public defense lawyers.”

David Brooks: The urban backlash against the populist backlash – The Salt Lake Tribune

The populist backlash came in different forms in different parts of the world. In Central and Eastern Europe it came in the form of nationalist strongmen — Victor Orban, Vladimir Putin, the Law and Justice party in Poland. In Latin America it came in the form of the Pink Tide — a group of left-wing economic populists like Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. In the Anglosphere it was white ethnic nationalism of Donald Trump and Brexit. In the Middle East it was Muslim fundamentalism. In China it was the increasing authoritarianism of Xi Jinping. In India it was the Hindu nationalism of Narendra Modi.

Conversations

What topics are dominating conversations this new year? Last night, late into the night, I was having a serious conversation on what to do with high level nuclear waste. Maybe not the most popular subject when there are shooting attacks at the Fort Lauderdale airport and extreme cold weather and snow blanketing the nation this week but topical nonetheless.

Questions, answers about the federal campus safety law

Questions, answers about the federal campus safety law: http://bigstory.ap.org/77b34155ba4548a690afcba46fd39cde&utm_source=android_app&utm_medium=wordpress&utm_campaign=share

Pros and cons about the Clery law. I work at a college and above all students must feel safe before learning can happen. It is about time that universities, of all types private and public – 2 year or 4 year, are transparent on reporting incidences of rape and drugs or other crimes. Parents and students should be alerted to possible dangers on campus.
A lot of my students over the years have felt safe based on ignorance of the nature of crimes perpetrated on campuses. They learn but many experience date rape or other compromising situations.
These are fresh, curious young people and they are our future. Don’t they deserve better from institutions or higher learning and academia in general?
